Discovery™ System Controllers

The Marvell Discovery™ family of system controllers are targeted at high-bandwidth communication system applications such as Internet core routers, wireless base stations and infrastructure equipment for xDSL and Storage Area Networks (SAN). The Marvell Discovery chips integrate high-performance system peripherals and Local Area Network (LAN)/Wide Area Network (WAN) communication ports with the industry's highest performance 64-bit RISC system controller.

The Marvell Discovery GT-64240A, GT-64241A and GT-64242A system controller devices are designed for high-performance communications systems based on industry-standard 64-bit MIPS microprocessors, including the PMC-Sierra™ RM7000 family. These devices support the MIPS processor's traditional SysAD bus, as well as the extended PMC-Sierra MIPS R7000 bus protocols for maximum processor-to-peripheral communications bandwidth.

The Marvell Discovery GT-64260A, GT-64261A and GT-64262A system controllers are ideal for high-performance communications applications and support industry-leading PowerPC processors, including the Motorola MPC74xx and MPC75x families, and the IBM 750 series CPUs. They support both the 60x and the advanced Motorola MPX bus protocols for maximum system bandwidth.

These devices maintain software compatibility with our market-leading system controllers, the Marvell Legacy GT-64120 and GT-64130 system controllers, providing OEMs with a significant time-to-market advantage in the development of next-generation communications products. All of the Marvell Discovery family devices are pin-compatible along processor lines—enabling the devices to be interchanged without costly board redesigns.

Unique CrossBar Architecture

Each Marvell Discovery chip combines an advanced high-performance crossbar architecture with our system controller technology to deliver unprecedented performance for next generation Internet infrastructure equipment. Providing up to 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of aggregate throughput (up to a 12x improvement over traditional controllers), the crossbar supports non-blocking concurrent transactions among peripherals at full bus speeds, enabling the Discovery-based systems to support full-duplex OC-48 data rates.
